Make AI Interview You Before It Starts the Work

3 min read

You know what I stopped doing? Giving AI half the information and hoping it reads my mind. šŸ˜‚

Before I ask it to create something, I tell AI to interview ME. One question at a time. It asks about my goals, audience, budget, and what success looks like. Then it builds from my actual answers. The point isn't to ask AI to magically run your business. It's to give it useful context, ask for a specific output, and review the result yourself.

How to Make AI Interview You

Step 1: Gather your material. Start with your actual new service idea or client project. Include the audience, outcome, any deadlines and constraints, and a real example when possible.

Step 2: Use the prompt below. Replace the bracketed placeholders with your own information. The more relevant context you provide, the less guessing AI has to do.

Step 3: Review and refine. Check the facts, tone, and recommended actions before sharing or acting on the result.

The Exact AI Prompt I Use to Make AI Interview Me

Copy and paste this into ChatGPT or another AI assistant:

šŸŽ¤ Copy-and-Paste Prompt

I want you to act as my strategic thinking partner and interview me before completing the task I’m about to give you.

Your job is to understand exactly what I’m trying to accomplish before you begin creating anything.

Here’s how I want you to approach this:

  1. Ask me one question at a time. Do not give me a long list of questions all at once.

  2. Wait for my answer before asking the next question.

  3. Ask thoughtful, strategic questions that help clarify my goals, target audience, desired outcome, budget, timeline, preferences, limitations, and expectations, where relevant.

  4. If my answer is unclear or incomplete, ask a follow-up question instead of making assumptions.

  5. Do not ask unnecessary questions or repeat information I’ve already provided.

  6. After approximately 6–8 questions, summarize what you’ve learned and identify any important information that is still missing.

  7. Ask me to confirm your understanding before you begin working.

  8. Once I approve the summary, help me complete the original task using the information gathered during the interview.

Important:Ā Do not simply agree with everything I say. If you notice a gap, contradiction, or something I haven’t considered, respectfully challenge me and help me think it through.

Here is what I need help with:

[INSERT YOUR PROJECT, IDEA, TASK, OR GOAL HERE]

Start by asking me your first question.

My Favorite Bonus Prompt

What question should you have asked me but didn't?

Example: How I'd Use This in Business

Imagine you're working with new service idea or client project. You have the raw details, but you need to turn them into something useful. Paste your real material, use the prompt, and check the result against what you know. The output should make your next step easier, not replace your professional judgment.

What to Watch Out For

Don't give AI vague instructions and then assume the answer is correct. Don't upload private client data without permission. Don't let it invent commitments or claim it verified information you never provided.

The Takeaway

Better questions first. Better results after. Save this prompt and adapt it to the next real task you face.
